Increasing the Performance of a Composite Flange

JNDC were contracted by Galen to design a composite flange able to carry a glass fibre lamp post. The flange had to withstand a 50kNm moment load.
Current lamp post design use either steel flanges or extremely heavy GRP flanges. These cause problems associated with either thermal mismatch as well as difficulty in assembly.

Using the latest composite FEA technology Nastran, JNDC developed a lightweight flange design.
 A prototype was developed and tested in the field which withstood a 80kNm test for half the weight of the previous design.
